As firefighters dug through the rubble of the World Trade Center in the aftermath of Sept. 11, 2001, they unearthed two intersecting steel girders that formed an almost perfect cross. In the days, weeks, months and years that have followed, the Twin Towers Cross has offered a symbol of solace for America in a time when tragedy and sadness threatened to overwhelm.
Today, the Twin Towers Cross stands proudly and poignantly outside of St. Paul's Chapel, across the street from the World Trade Center site where it was recovered.
