Located directly across the street from the World Trade Center site, FDNY Ten House is home to Engine 10 and Ladder 10 -- and is one of only two New York houses that has an engine and a ladder company with the same numbers (the other is FDNY 52, in case you fancy a good bit of trivia).
During the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the firehouse was pummeled with falling debris and nearly destroyed. Five of its firefighters made the ultimate sacrifice that day, but all wasn't for naught. Despite the damage it sustained, Ten House served as a rest station and command post for all FDNY rescue and recovery efforts in the vital days that followed.
After extensive repairs, Ten House reopened on Nov. 5, 2003. And on June 10, 2006, it became the home of the FDNY Memorial Wall, a bronze-engraved monument to the 343 New York firefighters that gave their lives on that fateful day in September
2001.
